Collection: Fuzzy bucket hats

The fur is faux: every hat in Ghelter's faux fur bucket hat range names a synthetic material, such as acrylic, in the material line of its product page.

Read that material line before you buy, because it is where a listing states the fiber, with entries such as "Fur (Acrylic)" or "Acrylic". Faux fur is made from synthetic fibers designed to look and feel like animal fur, which is why it can be soft, light and printed in bold colors and patterns.

Fuzzy and fluffy are shoppers' words for a raised, soft pile rather than fabric names, and sherpa is a fleece made to imitate the curly pile of shearling.

Ghelter's listings say fur or plush rather than these words, so judge the pile by the photos: a fine, close pile usually reads as fuzzy and a lighter, airier one as fluffy. The shape is the same bucket hat in every case, so the choice comes down to how soft and how bold you want it to look.

A faux fur bucket hat suits cool, dry days because a dense pile traps some air over the top of your head, but a bucket brim usually leaves your ears uncovered.

On windy or very cold days, wear a thin headband or ear warmers underneath, or pull a hood over the hat. A denser pile gives more insulation than a thin, sparse one, and a couple of styles mention a soft inner lining on the product page.

Use a soft tape to measure the circumference of your head about 1-2 cm above your eyebrows, then look for a span that includes that number. Check the care label first; if there is none, spot clean a faux fur bucket hat with a damp cloth and a little mild soap, because soaking and machine washing can mat the pile.

Dab the stain instead of rubbing it, then dab again with a cloth rinsed in clean water. If the label allows it, a quick hand wash in cool water is the gentlest full wash. Shake the hat, reshape it and let it air dry away from heaters, because heat can mat or damage synthetic fibers, then brush the pile gently to bring back its fluff.
