Collection: Leather Cowboy Hats

A leather cowboy hat keeps the crown and brim of the classic western shape but is made from hide: sturdy, it keeps its shape well and can soften and darken as you wear it.

Frequently asked questions about leather cowboy hats

Are your leather cowboy hats genuine leather or vegan leather?

All of Ghelter's leather cowboy hats are genuine leather, and nearly all of them list the hide as cowhide. Check the material line on the product page before you buy: for example, it reads "100% Genuine Leather (Cowhide)".

Cowhide is thick, so most leather cowboy hats keep their crown and brim shape well.

Genuine leather can soften, take the shape of your head and darken gradually. On a cowboy hat, look at how the brim edge is finished, whether the sweatband is stitched flat and whether the crown stays upright when you press it. Other shapes in genuine leather are in our genuine leather hats and caps collection.

What is the difference between a leather and a suede cowboy hat?

A smooth leather hat has a sleek, finished surface you can wipe clean, while suede has a soft, brushed nap that looks warmer and more relaxed but shows water spots and stains more easily.

Some leather hats also show a brushed, matte side, usually under the brim, so check the photos and the material line on each page. If you want a hat that is suede all over, our suede cowboy hats are listed on their own.

How should a leather cowboy hat fit, and does it stretch with wear?

A leather cowboy hat should sit level, about a finger's width above your eyebrows and ears, firm enough to stay put when the wind picks up and loose enough not to press on your forehead. Genuine leather can give a little with wear, so the fit may ease slightly over time.

Ghelter's leather cowboy hats run from 55 to 61 cm (21.7 to 24.0 inches), and some are adjustable within their size span, as the product page notes. To find your size, wrap a soft tape measure around your head 1-2 cm (0.5-1 inch) above the eyebrows and match it to the span on the listing; between two sizes, take the larger. The US equivalents are on our sizing page.

Can a leather cowboy hat get wet in the rain?

A light drizzle is usually fine for genuine leather, but heavy rain can stiffen and mark it. Get the hat out of the rain when you can.

Pat it dry with a towel, then leave it upside down on its crown or on a hat stand in a well-ventilated spot at room temperature, away from radiators and direct sun, until it is dry. Fast heat is what warps the brim and cracks the leather. Once it is dry, a thin coat of leather conditioner on the smooth areas restores the softness.

How do I clean and condition a leather cowboy hat?

Dust a leather cowboy hat with a soft brush or dry cloth first, then wipe marks with a barely damp cloth, and condition the smooth leather once it is fully dry. Never soak the hat or put it near a heater.

Once it is dry, work a conditioner made for leather into the smooth leather in a thin layer, trying it first on a small hidden patch because some products darken the hide; napped or suede-like areas, such as the underside of a brim, only need a soft brush. Keep the hat upside down on its crown or on a hat stand rather than hanging it by the brim or crushing it under other things, so the brim keeps its curve. How long does delivery take, and can I return a leather cowboy hat if the size is wrong?

Orders go out within 1-2 business days, and tracked, insured delivery usually takes 5-12 business days. Shipping is free over 50 EUR. If the size turns out wrong, you can ask for a return up to 30 days after delivery.

To start a return, write to support@ghelter.com and attach one photo of the hat and one of the shipping label. It must come back unworn, with its tags, original packaging and proof of purchase. The return label is free only if the hat arrives in poor condition, is not in the correct size or differs from the listing photos (small color differences do not count). If you bought on sale or used a discount code, the return shipping is on you. To change size, return the hat and place a new order.
